Copenhagen Denmark Restaurants

Copenhagen boasts honourable ten Michelin star restaurants, Kommandanten in Ny Adelgade is the only Danish two-star restaurant. Dining in the city is rather expensive, especially wine list. In some locations tables should be booked and even paid for up to two weeks in advance. Danish cuisine is known for all kinds of fish dishes, and, of course, smorredbrod (known to Europeans as smorgasbord) - open sandwiches have all manner of savoury toppings, typically including boiled egg and dill, beetroot, mackerel, roast onions, cold meats and goose or pork dripping. Danish pastries are a must to accompany coffee or lunch.

The best smorgasbords are served at Ida Davidsen's, whose family business counts for five generations during past 100 years. Ida can now claim to offer the longest smorgasbord menu in Denmark at six feet (2m) long, for example "Victor Borge" sandwich with salmon, freshly marinated lumpfish caviar, crayfish tails, Greenland shrimp, lime and dill mayonnaise.

Sankt Gertrud's Kloster houses in a refurbished medieval sanctuary about 700 years old. Along with enchanting design and romantic candlelight is boasts unique "trilogy cuisine", including three tastes in one dish. There are also various exquisite snacks such as oysters and a selection of Danish cheeses.

Den Sorte Ravn in Nyhavn combines fine Danish cuisine with some French twists. Speciality of this restaurant is fillet of turbot prepared in puff pastry, with lobster salmon mousse and parsley, served with lobster sauce flavoured with cognac. It also features delicious fish dishes.

Café Sorgenfri, originally a 150 years old sailors' tavern, retains it original style with its gilt-framed pictures, wrought-iron chandeliers and leather-panelled walls. It is a very popular bar, serving various beers and old Danish cuisine.

Ristorante Vesuvio offers Italian cuisine with traditional pastas and pizzas, accompanied by fish and meat gourmet dishes.  Det Lille Apotek dates back to 1720s. It was a very popular artists' hub, frequented by such celebrities as Hans Christian Andersen and Soren Kierkegaard.

Promenaden in Tivoli are a chain of gourmet restaurants in the famous Tivoli Gardens with excellent cuisine and affordable prices, very popular among the tourists. Le Sommelier serves French cuisine and features great wine list.
