Copenhagen Denmark Architecture

Copenhagen showcases versatile architectural styles, from medieval to hi-tech modern. The city is home for numerous experimental design studios and regularly hosts festivals, conferences and events, such as Copenhagen Architecture + Design Days, attracting participants from different European countries.

To some extent every style is connected with a particular Danish King, for they paid much attention to the development of the capital. Absalon's Castle was found on the site of the present Christiansborg Palace, hidden underneath the castles, built over the same place. Jarmers Tarn Tower was constructed in 1500s, during the period of extensive fortification building. Kastellet comprised formidable system of earthworks and defensive walls around the city.

The Renaissance period was marked by vast city building projects, initiated by Christian IV. The Round Tower, Rosenborg Castle, The Stock Exchange and the area of Christianshavn are attributed to his city expansion plan. These edifices feature the distinctive Northern Renaissance style.

Christiansborg Palace, begun in 1730s, was a magnificent Baroque castle, commissioned as royal residence by Christian VI. Unfortunately in 50 years it burned down, with only Royal Stables and Court Theatre remaining. The latter now hosts the Theatre Museum. Elegant Rococo style is evident in the city thanks to Frederik V, who commissioned magnificent Amalienborg Palace and during the reign of whom a whole new district of the city, Frederiksstaden, had emerged.

In 1790s-1800s the city suffered two great fires, which demolished royal residence, and bombardment by English fleet, which destroyed the Church of Our Lady. The revival was marked with spreading of Classicist style, embodied in the projects of new Christiansborg, the Law Courts ( and former city hall) at Nytorv and the Church of Our Lady in Norregade.

The Palace Hotel, centrally located opposite the City Hall, is a beautiful piece of Art Noveau from 1910, as well as Savoy Hotel at Vesterbrograde. SAS Royal Hotel and National Bank feature Modernism style. The original New Danish architecture is visible in the prestige residential areas. New Opera House and the Black Diamond (Royal Library annex) are great examples of this trend.
